Beckett's 17-24 Month Old Journal
Herding...
Beckett started herding when he was one year old. He did very little in the summer but had not trouble understanding what his job was. He is amazing at his understanding of where he needs to be and where the bubble is to control the sheep. In September 2017 he competed in his first trial - AHBA (American Herding Breed Association) and got his JUNIOR HERDING DOG title. The second video is of his AKC PT run on November 19, 2017. In December he will be entered in AKC STARTED SHEEP AND STARTED GEESE. Pictures and video to follow.
Beckett entered his first AKC STARTED GEEESE AND STARTED SHEEP herding trial on December 9 and 10 2017. This was his first BIG BOY trial - meaning not pre-trial or junior herding classes. Out of 45 dogs he was awarded 3 HIGH IN TRIALS: one for his STARTED GEESE run on Saturday with a score of 98; HIGH IN TRIAL overall (combination of high scores in 2 livestock - sheep, geese and/or cattle); and a HIGH IN TRIAL FOR SHEEP on Sunday with an almost perfect score of 99.5 out of 100. There were 22 dogs in his started classes. He did especially well on Sunday when the livestock were tired and not cooperative..... however, his quite, non-pushy style was just what they needed to give him lovely scores. On Geese Sunday he got a 98 and had to do a run-off for the placing. Beckett is 19 months old. See his Video of his HIT GEESE AND SHEEP runs belowl.

Obedience
Beckett has been working on parts of obedience since he was quite young. For example he started his scent work at 10 weeks with learning some fun nosework. He started to retrieve all types and textures of objects (including his dumbbell, metal and leather articles, spoons, balls) at a very early age. He learned about the pivot and correct heel position on the platform disc very early. It has all been fun as we put things together for his obedience work.
He starts in the house with few distractions and now has moved out to our driveway. He still is very distracted in new places which is one of our new goals.
Here is is latest video at age 17 months (November 5, 2017)

We have been working on all of the obedience exercises and increasing the heel time with focus until treats are rewarded. I am feeling that I am not very motivated to continue this work right now especially since we will be competing in rally first. I decided to get all my rally signs together for novice and begin to have fun integrating rally work with other fun things like 2x2 weave poles, go outs, targeting, cone work, DB retrieve, fronts and finishes. Beckett is now 22 months old and here is our most recent work. My main goal was to get some focused and real interest and motivation in heel work. I am happy with our progress in our rally work.
Beckett is now 23 months old and is doing very well in herding. He has his started titles in AKC, AHBA and ASCA. This is his first open field (COURSE B). The challenging part for a young dog is ignoring the dog and handler in the field holding the livestock. Beckett had trouble with this during his lesson but did well a the trial only loosing 3 points for his outrun.
