Body Awareness, Tricks, and Balance Discs

Picture
When Myst was 10 weeks old she was introduced to balance discs. She has continued to enjoy playing on them and has excellent body awareness and core strength as you will see in these videos. The first video is an introduction to all the fun things that can be done to build this core strength and awareness. Then each short video shows how Myst was introduced to each exercise or game. Working with balance discs is excellent for indoor activity with your dog.

Balance discs help with compression, extension and proprioception. Proprioception is spatial orientation such as isolating hind feet for work.  You will see this in Myst's work with the small pods and how she has learned to place her hind feet on different configurations without looking.

Fitness discs include different sizes of balance discs, the dome disc, warble boards, the small pods, the peanut and donut. Other creative things such as ladders, poles, dishes, boxes, stools can be used for perch work, box work, plank work and other fun balance and body awareness games.

A few guidelines when working with balance discs:
  • Begin with one disc and reward your dog for interacting with it.
  • Introduce your dog to each disc you will be working with.
  • Your goal for static work should be that your dog can hold a position of stand, sit or down for 10 seconds.
  • When your dog is comfortable with static work then introduce movement. You will see many ways to have fun with your dog on the balance discs. There is no end to the creative way to interact with these discs.
