Cyclone's DYLAN CGC TDN
This page follows Dylan's journey. His work and training are then documented according to his age.
What the puppy learns now will shape the kind of dog it will be forever./ J. Paul Scott 1958. "Scientific studies have shown that there are 5 critical periods in a puppy's life. The five phases of mental development during which adverse conditions could cripple a dog emotionally for life. Conversely, positive conditions during these 5 phases will produce dogs of the highest caliber mentally and socially."

8-12 Weeks - A puppies trainability, or learning facilities, are operating at full capacity now. This period marks a time when the puppy will learn at a fast and furious pace.
This is why you will see so many fun learning games and interactions with Dylan. He has free time in the doggie gym with all kinds of fun balance discs which he free explores. He is not just interacting with me but has 3 or 4 times a day to play and interact (and play they do) with my older Border Collie, BECKETT. He also has time where I want to foster his being able to amuse himself in an X-pen. AND now I want him to learn to be alone for short times in his x-pen or crate - he is not always happy with this but he has to learn. We do as much socialization as possible without having had his 2nd set of shots which happen at 12 weeks.
12-16 Weeks Old
First, we are looking forward to our 12 weeks puppy shots on 12/12/23. While there still is great caution that must be taken (research shows that immunization is still 50/50) I feel a little more comfortable with at least having him touch the ground in a few selected places. We will also do more socialization especially with children where they gather locally. So far it has been a one-on-one recent visit with children. Research shows that during this period the puppy will makes its first attempt to establish itself as the dominant in the family pack. It will test to see if it can physically turn on its owner and get away with it. Right now that is taking the form of barking in the x-pen after exercise and potty breaks. Have also started a rest time early afternoon in a crate away from us for one hour to be increased for short evenings out.

Beginning in 2024 Dylan will have his own "INTRODUCTION TO ODOR - SCENT WORK" page. His scent work will be separate from his other videos since first my largest page views are for my scent work done in the past "How I Taught Utility Scent Articles." I never filmed the very first steps of this with either Beckett or Myst who both love the articles and have done very well. I attribute this to having fun with the search in the plastic containers for some time...It was a game and they had fun. No pressure on when they had to learn this to compete.. So I have continued this with Dylan.
I have copied his first 4 scent work videos on this page since he started at age 10 weeks and this continues to 2024 at age 15 weeks. Starting January 8, 2024 he will be taking Aleks Woodroffe's "Intro to Oder" class for 6 weeks at her Release Canine online class. The videos of his work will be posted there and provides more insight into how to get started not only with a puppy but dog of any age with scent work. There is sooooo much reinforcement that all dogs seem to love scent work.
What attracts me is 2 things: first it provides an excellent and fun foundation for scent articles in utility and 2nd competitions and events can be tailored to the novice or young dog perhaps only choosing one event to enter them in such as containers (4 events include containers, buried, interior, exterior). This acquaints them with having a judge and people in the ring/room with them and also getting more comfortable with showing with treats, praise and reinforcement. This way they can still train and practice their obedience but not begin showing too young and loose this young dog enthusiasm that you will clearly see Dylan show in his dumbbell retrieve video at the end of 2023. I have see too many dogs loose their joy of obedience work by being pushed too early into the competitive environment just because they seemed to know the exercise.
My plan for Dylan, which provides a great deal of time to prepare, is the ORT (Odor Recognition Test) by NSW (National Association of Scent Work) to be held in Prescott, AZ in May 2024. The dog has to be able to recognize the 3 odors each in a separate test by identifying a box (out of 12 containers) with BIRCH, ANAISE and CLOVE. Until this test is passed the dog cannot compete in NSW. Dogs can be 6 months of age for the ORT but must be one year for competing in the NSW trials.
