DYLAN 16-20 Weeks
The Next Part of our Journey
- Dylan's final shots will be done in a few weeks and finally he will be able to walk around in new places and meet more people AND get introduced to sheep or goats.
- My goal is always to continue to build his enjoyment and fun working with me. He learns so fast and always is looking for more I have to be careful to be sure not to push him or to be sure to bring in a lot of fun for us to do together.
- He really has quickly picked up his intro to odor and scent work and now loves doing this. He is searching for single visible hides and from a large metal container both inside and outside. This tells me how fortunate to have him enjoy this so much that even with teaching the obedience foundation which he enjoys and does so well, that we will do more with scent work. There is an ORT (Odor Recognition Test) for NSW in May that would be fun to do just for the experience of a competition, judges, people and all that is going on and "NO everyone has not come to meet only him". :)
- Will continue with whatever socialization now possible since he will have had his shots.
- Continue to build strength, rear end awareness, body awareness and proprioception in the doggie gym.
- Always trying hard to discourage and protect him from jumps or leaps when he gets the zoomies. Having a larger space to now be able to run where we train in Cottonwood will help.
- TEACHING DYLAN TO BACK UP and have rear end awareness
- Kickback stand based on the hand target.
- More work with the hand target and target stick
- More paw pods
VIDEO 1: Dylan and the Floppy Fish.
Who says you need a big green lawn when you have a floppy fish. Karen Herceg (Cyclone Border Collies) introduced a floppy fish for cats to the Cyclone Quintet puppies which they went crazy for. Ordered one for dogs which took weeks to get here but it is so funny to watch how it makes made Dylan crazy.
After reading some comments posted on Facebook I must add that this was introduced on a cold, indoor snowy day where Dylan had tons of energy. Yes I am very aware that a dog can get dependent on this and over arousal could happen. I never turn a dog loose with things like this to cause an over arousal habit. It was fun and on the 2nd day he was not as crazy about it since we had done some outdoor training first before it was offered.
VIDEO 2: PAW PODS FOR PROPRIOCEPTION. This is a video NOT ABOUT DYLAN BUT one of my old videos that had the most views in 2023. I thought I would look at it and loved some of what my craze red dog, MYST, was doing with paw pods that I had forgotten. A lot of balance disc and proprioception work involves a dogs hind end which is very hard to train especially when they are young such as Dylan is at 16 weeks. But I thought it might be a good time to start teaching him BACK-UP and MOVING FROM ONE PAW POD TO THE NEXT. This video of MYST AND HER WORK WITH PAW PODS IS SHOWN for an example of what can be done with ongoing balance disc work.
VIDEO 3: It is clear that a puppy has to be a certain age to do many obedience tasks such as a tight sit, kickback stand, fold back down and the BACK. I felt Dylan was doing his positions so well and has a great hand touch that we progressed to a few new things seen in this video.
VIDEO 4: Scent work is my last sport that I seldom participate in since all my trialing time is for obedience and herding, HOWEVER, for Dylan novice scent work will be a perfect way to get him accustomed to a trialing experience PLUS... most of all to help him transfer this to utility scent articles. Again so many dogs fail scent articles perhaps due to a lot of pressure put on them to get it ready for competition. This way he is playing a game he loves with odor - first with birch then his scent aricles.
I was not sure that Dylan would be able to do these off leash since this area of our outside courtyard he has not had off leash access to. He handled it so well without getting distracted and was committed to his search and staying on sources indicating the hide until I got there to reward.
VIDEO 5: With beautiful weather it is fun to create a circuit outdoors of some of the fundamentals that are practicing. Most are made into fun games which Dylan enjoys. We seldom repeat one more than 3 times thus making them ideal for a circuit.
VIDEO 6: DYLAN MEETS THE GOATS - his first instinct test at age 5 months. Around 5 months after all the shots have been given it is fun try the puppy on livestock..... geese or goats. Since Dylan is large enough Dawna decided to try him on the goats which are perfect for starter dogs. It was so fun to see how much he not only enjoyed it and of course at his age was chasing but he was not afraid of them. This is exactly what we are looking for - no fear and enjoying this new sport. Of course he is way to young to start structured herding work but every couple of weeks he could be introduced to the goats for 5-10 minutes to see how much fun this is. Handler: Dawna Sims from her Painted Seven Ranch. Dawna has handled and titled all my BCs and put AKC HC on Myst and Beckett.
