Tool Kit for Body Awareness Work

Picture
When getting started with body awareness work it is helpful to purchase a few balance discs.
This section provides and overview of balance discs and tools. Visit the FitPAWS web site to order and learn more about the balance discs and other canine conditioning equipment.

The FitPaws BalanceDiscs

Picture
The FitPAWS balance discs come in two sizes: a 22 inch training surface and a 14 inch training surface. Both of thee sizes are excellent when a dog is just beginning their work with balance discs. Later, as you will see in the videos, you can combine these discs for other new and fun balance challenges. I like to use several large and 5 or 6 smaller discs for our work.

Getting Started with Balance Discs with an Older Dog - Ziggy the Puli
Ziggy is 6 years old and was introduced first to the FitPAWS foot targets then to the balance disc.

FitPAWS Paw Pods

Picture
These fun paw pods are more difficult for the dog to use but are excellent for developing proprioception. It took Myst 2 weeks to learn how to put both rear feet on a disc.
Exercises include feet on all 4 pods;  one front pod - 2 back; 2 back pods - 1 front; 1 front and 1 back pod.

Pods can also be used in combination with the larger discs for variation in balance work and "journeying with discs" which you will see in the videos.

For more challenging work put the pods upside down with the dome side down.

The FitPAWS Donut

Picture
The FitPAWS Donut is a more advanced balance disc requiring more balance and skill to sit or stand on.  It is excellent for core strength, balance and proprioception. They may be used with the dog sitting on the donut; with the front or back feet on another disc; or sitting up such as you see Myst doing. You will see the donut being used in combination with other discs on some of the videos.

You will need to purchase the donut from FitPaws or another distributor of their donut. Cost $49

NOTE: You will also need to purchase the FitPaws inflatable ring to help stabilize the donut. Cost $21.00

The FitPAWS Peanut

Picture
The FitPAWS Peanut is a favorite balance disc. They come in different sizes. This is a large size so Myst can sit, stand, turn and do other exercises comfortably on this disc.
